Supporting Our Local Family-Owned Businesses

May 21, 2021

Local, family-owned businesses add character to our communities. Most of us feel nostalgia for small downtown shopping areas - the tree-lined streets, the bustling shops. What comes to mind first? The mom and pop bakery where you bought your sister’s birthday cake? The cozy pub on the corner? The florist that always had fresh hydrangeas? Chances are, these small businesses and the familiar faces that run them are staples in your community.

The past year has presented challenges for businesses of all sizes. Now more than ever, we need to rally around the local businesses that bring value to our hometowns. Why? Because when we help our neighbors, we all benefit.

Research supports the idea that shopping locally is better for communities - for so many reasons. When you buy from a local business, you’re almost guaranteed to experience better customer service. This is because at a small business, you’re not just a transaction, you’re a neighbor and valued partner in the owner’s vision! Connecting with the people in your community through monetary support and friendly conversation benefits everyone involved.

There are also economic benefits for everyone in the community. This study by Michigan State University showed that in Grand Rapids, Michigan, $73 out of every $100 spent at a local business are reinvested into the local economy. This means that other local businesses, charities, and your neighbors themselves benefit from you choosing mom-and-pop shops instead of national chains.

So, how do you know if you’re working with a family-owned business? There are a few sure-fire ways to figure this out. First, look up their social media. You’ll likely see posts geared towards your community, and maybe even pictures and information about the owners themselves. Second, the “About” page on these websites will provide background into how and where the business started. Third and easiest of all - just ask! Local businesses usually take great pride in their community involvement and will happily share stories about how they’ve integrated into your town.

There are myriad resources to help you find and support small businesses near you. We love this post that gives ideas for supporting small businesses during the pandemic. If you’re looking to find more locally-owned businesses near you, American Express has a map showing small businesses in your area that accept American Express. Yelp offers a “Best Small Businesses Near Me” category where you can see not only small businesses near you, but reviews as well. And if you want to do more to help your local businesses, apart from spending money, leave a review! Small businesses find these testimonials essential - they show others how great the business is. A review often helps consumers choose between shopping small or going to a chain.

Local businesses add life and color to our communities, and they deserve our support! If you are a local, family-owned business, then get your employees health coverage with HealthChoice of Michigan.
